Chicago Marathon Soundtrack

October 7, 2010

Well, there won’t be any more posts about runs as the Marathon is this Sunday.

So, instead of a couple final posts about short runs that, at this point, aren’t really a big deal, I decided I’d list out the songs that are going to be on my iPod come Sunday.

During my training process, I’ve had lots of different songs on my iPod to try to help motivate me.  These are the ones that “felt” the best while I was training and thus made the cut.

I aimed for roughly six hours of music as my goal in the Marathon is simply to finish and you’re given 6.5 hours from the time the gun goes off to get over the finish line and still be considered an “Official Finisher”.

I trimmed about 10 songs off the list as the time was close to seven hours by the time I was done.  As is, it’s roughly 6.2 hours.  Oh well, hopefully I won’t hear any repeats outside my “Power Song”.  hehe

I’ll post about the race some time next week after I get back from Chicago.

p.s.  A “Power Song” for an iPod is a song that you can trigger at any time during the run by pressing a button.  It’s meant to pump you up and get you moving when you’re lagging.  Here’s mine for Sunday:

    hi,
i am about to go through the same process as you did a year ago so I found your blog really inspiring! you did not however mention anything about the marathon itself…how was it?
    thanks,
    peteer

The marathon was hot. It was 80-90 degrees so it took me far longer to finish than I ever imagined. But, I did finish, so I’m happy ultimately.

I’m in the process of training for Marine Corp in October and I’m currently in week 13 of the Nike+ program. I used the half marathon program for a race last year and it seemed to serve me well. I’m feeling like this program is quite intense and I’m wondering if I should switch to another training plan. How well do you feel that this training program did? I see that you completed your marathon – congrats!

I’d say, if anything, you need it to be intense. The marathon itself was much harder than anything I did in the program. Even though I ran the longest runs of the program without any difficulty or issues after, the marathon itself kicked my butt. (Mainly due to the high temps that day that I wasn’t prepared for: 80-90 degrees.)

The program is there to get your body in shape and get your mind wrapped around the idea of running this type of distance. I think it does that very well. Just make sure you don’t fall prey to normal beginner mistakes and you should be fine.

Once it decides to cool down here (it’s been 90-110 all summer), I’ll be using their programs again to get back into running.
